THE TRADITONAL SHAKER OVAL BOX

The workshop gives participants hand-on experience in making a nesting set of six oval boxes in cherry. Fee includes all materials, instruction booklet, and use of tools during the workshop. Intended both for new and experienced woodworkers. Background is given to the Shaker life and craftsmanship

A decade as a social anthropologist and another as a working craftsman in wood give background to being a boxmaker in the Shaker tradition. John Wilson taught woodworking courses at Lansing (Michigan) Community College. For the past twenty years he has been a boxmaker and teacher of the oval box workshop. Wilson has been as far as England with his specialty, encouraging the growth of this traditional craft.
