Brian Boggs Chair Class
Tools, Materials and Information
Chair Materials
Brian will bring the all of the materials for the chair and Hickory seat. Materials cost is $250 payable to Brian during class. He can take credit cards if you like.
Tool List
- Draw knife 6"-8" Brian has several for sale or to loan so don't purchase one if you don't have one yet. There are a lot of junkers out there.
- Spoke shaves - straight blade wooden or metal body. The Lie Nielsen Boggs shave is designed especially for this work. A half-round one is handy but optional. Brian also says the less expensive Veritas is OK.
- Brian also recommends the Kraus shave - call John Kraus at 828-656-2731
- Bench chisel - 1 1/4" - 2 " (used for scoring mortises - a plane iron will do just as well)
- 1/4" Mortise chisel tuned square and sharp. (Sorby with Boxwood handle reccomended)
- Block plane - Lie Nielsen low angle or Stanley 60 1/2
- Folding extension rule
- Sliding "T" bevel
- Dial Caliper - a good one, like Starrett - it needs to read in thousanths not fractions
- Dead blow hammer - 3 lbs or better (http://www.mcmaster.com/ or other machinists suppliers, auto supply, sometimes Big Lots)
- Dogu hammer available from Japan Woodworker
- Tape measure
- Card scrapers - bring a couple so you don't spend too much time sharpening
- Burnisher (well - tuned, no scratches)
- Combination square - 6" and/or 12"
- 24" Framing square
- Utility knife
- Metal butter knife - used to weave the seat
- Old flat screwdriver - that we can beat into a chip clearing tool
- Camera - to record your progress
- Gloves - for retrieving parts from hot steamer
- Magnifying glass (10x or stronger)
- Rasps - Auriou rasps are best, but bring what you have
