Cabinet Making with Nancy Hiller

This course will cover basic construction techniques and design considerations for built-in cabinets.  The example we build during the course will be a small base cabinet with one drawer and one door.

The processes covered will include:

Introduction to built-in cabinets
How are they distinct from freestanding work, and what kinds of structural and efficiency considerations should we have in mind when we design?
Choosing sheet materials, cutting accurately to size.  The techniques we use will lend themselves to small shops with basic equipment.

Carcase joinery
Biscuit joints, use of cleat supports; providing for adjustable shelving; planning for attachment of backs.

Face frame work
Planning and design
Milling solid stock
Joinery: mortise and tenon, pocket screwing, biscuit joints
Assembly
Attachment to cabinet carcase

Backs

Drawer hardware -- discussion of different types, installation
Drawer making
Milling stock, joinery techniques (rabbet and nail, biscuit joinery, dovetails if time allows)
 Drawer fitting and attachment

Doors
Design considerations include type of panel, whether door will be inset or half-overlay, and type of hinge that will be used
Joinery: mortise and tenon or rail and stile cutters
Panels -- solid wood or plywood
Assemble door
Fit door (inset)
Mortise door stile for traditional butt hinges and hang
