Hand tools class with Deneb Puchalski
Tools, Materials and Information
These are the things that Deneb would like to see you show up with. They are recommendations, so if you want to bring less and build up that is fine.
Planes
- block plane
- smoothing plane (#4 or #4 1/2)
- jack plane (#5, #5 1/2, or #62)
- * optional- jointer and/or scrub planes
- bare minimum of a block and a smoothing plane
Chisels
- set of any combination: 1/8", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", 1" (as many as possible)
- a mallet of some sort
Saws
- rip & crosscut backsaws (not panel saws)
Layout tools
- square
- machinist's protractor
- thin 6" ruler
- cutting gauge (Tite-Mark brand is excellent or any wheel cutting guage)
- mechanical pencil (fine lead)
Sharpening
- Eclipse or General style honing guide (side clamping guide)
- 1000 & 8000 grit waterstones (4000 optional)
- 9" X 12" shallow tupperware with lid (approximate size)
- 1/4" to 5/16" thick glass plate or granite lapping plate (Woodcraft $30)
- 120 grit wet/dry paper (Norton 3X is good) for flattening stones.
- **There are a few lapping surfaces at the school. If you bring your own it will ensure that you have one when you want it.)
Materials
- Wood for the cutting board project, shooting board and sharpening station will be provided at cost. $30
Deneb will be going over tuning up old planes so you are welcome to bring your projects with you.
You can order any Lie-Nielsen tools at a 15% discount though the school! The tools are sent directly to you - give a call if you are interested.
