Windsor chair class with David Wright
Tools, Materials and Information
The skills that will be learned are highly dependent on proper hand tools. The various tools that will be needed must be of high quality and I highly recommend that certain tool manufacturers be considered for your working enjoyment.
- Drawknife from Barrtools.com this is the best commercial knife available
- Scorp from Barrtools.com the new large radius scorp is best, the small radius works well too
- Spokeshave from Lie- Nielsen.com the Boggs flat sole shave is best
- Sliding bevel gage
- Plastic protractor
- Dividers for lay out
- 6 foot folding rule with 6 inch sliding extension
- Chair makers reamer for tapered hole boring from Highland hardware in Atlanta. Will need a hand brace to use the reamer, also purchased at Highlandwoodworking.com.
- Digital calipers for measuring mainly tenons. These are fairly inexpensive these days and very handy to have.
- Marking gage for striking a line
- Turning tools: ¾ inch roughing gouge, ½ inch skew, 1/8 inch parting tool, purchase High Speed Steel tools, turning calipers. All can be purchased at www.woodturnerscatalog.com
Other specialty tools such as reamers and drilling braces can be shared from the tool kit that David will be bringing. You don't need to make these purchases at this time.
